What Is the HRSP Battery Rebate?
The Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) is an Ontario government rebate that helps homeowners offset the cost of energy-efficient upgrades — including home battery storage and rooftop solar panels. It is delivered through Save on Energy and Enbridge.
If you've heard of the Canada Greener Homes Grant, that federal program closed to new applicants in February 2024. The associated Greener Homes Loan also closed on October 1, 2025. The HRSP is the provincial rebate program for solar and battery storage.
How Much Money Can You Get Back?
The HRSP offers two separate rebates that can be combined for a maximum of $10,000:
Battery Storage Rebate: Up to $5,000
The battery rebate is up to $5,000 for battery storage installed together with new solar. Standalone batteries and batteries added to existing solar are not covered. Rebates are capped and cannot exceed a share of the project cost.
Solar Panel Rebate: Up to $5,000
The solar rebate is up to $5,000 for rooftop solar. Taking the solar rebate means giving up net metering for the life of the system, so ask the installer whether the rebate or net metering comes out ahead for your home.
Combined: Up to $10,000
Install both solar and battery together and you can claim up to $10,000 in total HRSP rebates. Important: the battery must be paired with a new solar PV system to claim both rebates. Check Save on Energy for the current amounts and rules before you rely on them.
What it costs: The installed price depends on battery capacity, solar size, the electrical work and the site, and an installer quotes after seeing the home. The rebate reduces what you pay; ask the installer for a payback estimate based on your usage, rates and price.
Who Is Eligible for the HRSP?
To qualify for the HRSP rebate in 2026, you must meet these requirements:
- Property type: A home type the program accepts (Save on Energy lists them)
- Ownership: You must own the home
- Grid connection: Your home must be connected to the Ontario electricity grid
- Qualified installer: Installation must be completed by a contractor who meets the program's requirements
- System pairing: The battery must be paired with a new solar PV system to claim both rebates
Homeowners in Barrie, Orillia, Huntsville, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Collingwood, Midland, and throughout Muskoka District and Simcoe County all qualify, provided they meet the above criteria.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply for the HRSP Rebate
Save on Energy sets who applies, what paperwork is needed and how the rebate is paid. A typical path looks like this:
- Get a quote — Contact a local installer (or let muskokaenergystorage.ca pass your enquiry to an independent local installer) to assess your home and recommend a system
- Check eligibility — Ask the installer whether your property and planned system fit the HRSP rules, and confirm them on the Save on Energy website
- Schedule installation — The installer handles the installation and the required inspections
- Claim the rebate — Follow the program's current application steps; ask the installer how they handle the paperwork
- Choose a rate plan — Consider whether Ontario's ULO rate plan suits how you use electricity
What About the Greener Homes Grant?
The Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in February 2024. The Greener Homes Loan program also closed in October 2025. If you missed those programs, the HRSP is the provincial rebate to look at in 2026. Check Save on Energy for the current amounts and rules before you rely on them.
Why Act Now?
Rebate programs can change or close. The Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in February 2024. The HRSP is available now, but there's no guarantee it will last indefinitely, so check its current status before you plan around it.
The Ontario Energy Board sets electricity prices each November 1. On the ULO rate plan a battery can charge overnight at 3.7¢/kWh and power the home during the 37.7¢/kWh weekday peak (Ontario Energy Board prices in effect November 1, 2026). How much that saves depends on how much you use at peak, your rate plan and the system size.
