Typical Home Battery Storage Costs in Ontario
There is no standard price for a home battery system in Ontario. The cost depends on the battery's capacity, whether you add solar and how large the array is, the electrical work your home needs, and the site itself. An installer quotes after seeing the home.
The system you choose is the first thing that drives the cost:
- Battery capacity — a single smaller unit (for example, a modular 5 kWh battery) costs less than a 13.5 kWh battery, and a multi-battery system costs more again.
- Brand and inverter — some batteries include an inverter; others need a separate one.
- Solar pairing — adding solar panels raises the project cost, and the size of the array matters.
The installation work also affects the total; see what affects the total cost below. Quotes can differ by area, too — an installer serving remote Muskoka cottage country may price differently from one in Barrie or Orillia.
After HRSP Rebates: What You Actually Pay
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) can reduce your out-of-pocket cost. It offers up to $5,000 for rooftop solar and up to $5,000 more for battery storage installed together with new solar — up to $10,000 combined. Rebates are capped and cannot exceed a share of the project cost, so what you pay after the rebate depends on your quote.
Taking the solar rebate means giving up net metering for the life of the system, so ask the installer whether the rebate or net metering comes out ahead for your home. Check Save on Energy for the current amounts and rules before you rely on them.
Note: The HRSP battery rebate is only available when the battery is installed together with new solar. A standalone battery, or a battery added to existing solar, is not covered.
How Battery Storage Saves You Money on Hydro
The real value of a home battery in Ontario comes from the Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) rate plan. Under ULO pricing, Ontario electricity rates look like this (Ontario Energy Board prices in effect November 1, 2026):
- Overnight (11 PM – 7 AM): 3.7¢/kWh
- Mid-peak: 14.6¢/kWh
- On-peak (weekdays 4 PM – 9 PM): 37.7¢/kWh
- Weekend off-peak: 9.1¢/kWh
A battery can charge overnight at 3.7¢/kWh and power your home during the 37.7¢/kWh weekday peak. How much that saves depends on how much electricity you use at peak, your rate plan and the size of the system.
Savings and Payback
How quickly a battery pays for itself depends on your electricity use, how much of it you shift away from the peak, your rate plan, the rebates you qualify for and the price you pay. There is no typical payback figure, so ask the installer for a site-specific estimate based on your hydro bills.
Battery warranties differ between manufacturers. Check the manufacturer's warranty for capacity and years when you compare quotes.
Tesla Powerwall vs. Other Options
The Tesla Powerwall is a well-known option, but it's not the only one. Here's a quick comparison of popular battery systems available in the Muskoka and Simcoe County area:
- Tesla Powerwall 3: 13.5 kWh capacity, integrated inverter, sleek design. A common choice for whole-home backup.
- Enphase IQ Battery 5P: Modular 5 kWh units that can be stacked. Good for smaller homes or phased expansion.
- Generac PWRcell: Scalable from 9–18 kWh. Designed with backup power in mind.
- sonnen ecoLinx: Premium smart battery with advanced energy management. Sits at the higher end of the market, with a focus on software.
Your installer can recommend the best system for your specific home, energy usage pattern, and budget. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize backup power, daily savings, or both.
What Affects the Total Cost?
Several factors can push your quote higher or lower:
- Electrical panel upgrades — Older homes may need a panel upgrade to accommodate a battery
- Installation complexity — Difficult access, long conduit runs, or outdoor installations can add labour costs
- Battery capacity — Larger batteries cost more and can cover more of your peak-hour use
- Solar pairing — Adding solar increases the upfront cost, and new solar is required for the HRSP battery rebate
- Permit fees — Vary by municipality
